Ernest will share his versatile approach to making pottery influenced by sculptural concepts. Using the potter’s wheel as a starting point he will share techniques for altering the thrown form including paddling, carving, and faceting. Demonstrations will introduce cups, teapots, baskets, and throwing larger vessels. Ernest will share finishing ideas such as slip application, glazing, formulation, and ideas to consider for a cone 9 electric kiln firing. He will discuss insights about his studio practice, researching ideas, and embracing utilitarian and sculptural concepts.

Students are welcome to bring bone-dry pieces to experiment with Ernest’s slip and wax resist techniques.
