Welcome to the Duluth Art Institute Darkroom! The darkroom is located on the 2nd floor of the Duluth Depot (506 West Michigan St, Duluth, MN 55802). It is designed as a community space dedicated to the history and practice of darkroom and alternative process photography, and it operates under the umbrella of the Duluth Art Institute.

Hours: Monday-Saturday 9 am – 7 pm and Sunday 9am – 5pm or by special arrangement.

How to Rent

  • First-Time Renters: Attend a free orientation offered by DAI Darkroom Studio Manager, John Sager. Coordinate orientation directly with John at 715-490-0123 or johnsager100@gmail.com
  • Once orientation is complete and you’ve met the criteria for rental, John will submit your name to the Duluth Art Institute’s list of eligible renters.
  • Rental must be paid in full before renting the studio.
  • Once rental is paid in full your name will be added to the eligible renter’s list at the front desk of the Duluth Depot
  • Users check in at the front desk. Anyone found not checked in at the front desk may have membership revoked.

Monthly Rates

$30/month plus $50 deposit for chemicals

Daily Rates

$10/day plus $50 deposit for chemicals


Darkroom users are required to bring their own chemicals. A $50 deposit is required with rental. If chemicals are left after rental period is up, they will be disposed of and the deposit will not be returned.
