New Artist in Residence for the Ceramics Studio
Welcome Roald Molberg!

Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts the Duluth Art Institute was able to create a yearlong artist in residence position for our ceramics studio.  This program is designed to enhance and further the educational and creative experience of clay artists.  This opportunity provides work experience to pre-professional emerging artists giving them time and facilities to develop their work, and it also supports the educational and studio functions of the Duluth Art Institute clay studio.  We are pleased to announce that Roald Molberg was chosen for this opportunity.  Roald is an emerging artist from Duluth who has studied extensively at Lake Superior College.  He works both functionally and sculpturally, describing his work as “a state of sharing; sharing of myself and the spiritual renewal that is the creative act.”  Roald is also a proactive artist in the Duluth community; he has donated many of his pieces to the Empty Bowl fundraiser over the years, and he is a founding member of the Duluth Area Artists with Disabilities Alliance.

Wood Fire Workout
Dave Lynas
Tuesdays, May 20 & 27, 6-9pm
Weekend Firing - Saturday & Sunday, June 7 & 8
$165 ($195 non-members)

Fire your clay the old fashioned way – it’s like an art camp for adults.  Spend the last two weeks in May making low-fire work in our studio in preparation for a weekend of firing in Dave Lynas’ new wood kiln “Orion” up at Island Lake.  Depending on the weather, other primitive firing methods might occur such as raku, bonfire, and pit firing.  Take part in the kiln preparation by gathering wood and keeping the fires burning.  It’s community building and art making in one inspirational class.

Independent Study in Clay
Session 1:  Mondays, June 9 – July 28
Session 2:  Tuesdays, August 12 – September 30
6:30-9pm
$165 ($195 non-members)

Love working in clay but lack the necessary space and tools?  If you have some experience with ceramics this is a wonderful way to spend the summer months.  Check in once a week with other classmates and instructor Sheila Staubus (Session 1) and Dave Lynas (Session 2) to help focus your work, and use the rest of the week to create.  “Merlin,” the gas kiln, will be fired during this class (and possibly a raku firing thrown in there, too).

Beginning Clay
Sheila Staubus
Tuesdays, June 17 – August 5
6:30-9pm
$165 ($195 non-members)

Learn the basics of hand building, wheel throwing, glazing, and firing in this introduction to ceramics.  Perfect for people with no experience using clay or for those just looking for time to improve their skills.

Fall Watercolor Workshop Preview – Early Registration Now
Three Days/Three Subjects with Keith Thompson
Monday – Wednesday
October 20-22, 9am-4pm
$170 ($210 non-members)

Keith Thompson has instructed watercolor workshops across Minnesota for the past ten years and now he is bringing his accomplished talents to the Duluth Art Institute studios.  A longtime member of the Lake Superior Watercolor Society, Keith has exhibited throughout the Northland including the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids, winning several awards there, and the Kess Gallery in Ely.  Keith’s versatile, yet signature, style ranges from abstract to photo-realism, with everything in between.  His subject matter encompasses a wide array of imagery; landscapes, wildlife, portraiture, figure painting, and abstract fields of color.  In this workshop you will spend three days on three subjects – landscapes, figurative portraiture, and wildlife.  There is something for everyone to experience and learn.  Start the day with artist demos then build on these newfound skills in a positive group setting, mixed with one-on-one instruction and critiques with Keith.  It’s the perfect mini-workshop to get your artistic juices flowing before the snow flies.  For intermediate watercolorists and beyond.  Supply list will be mailed to all who register.

6-8:30pm
$140 ($165 non-members) – model fee included in tuition

For students who are absolute beginners to the idea of drawing from a live model, and for extremely rusty artists who need a refresher.  Very basic instruction about rendering the human form on paper including proper body proportions, foreshortening, and shading techniques.  Start out with quick gesture drawings to loosen up the limbs and move into longer poses for a more thoughtful approach to your composition.  Learn to draw like the masters and become comfortable with this age-old tradition of art making.  Supply list provided to all who register.

Figure Painting Workshop in Oils
Sarah Brokke
Thursday, June 12 – Saturday, June 14
10am-4pm
$165 ($195 non-member) - model fee included in tuition

This is an incredible opportunity to spend three full days painting from the live model.  Centered on students that have a basic understanding of oil paint, and some experience with figure drawing, this course will start with the basic layout of an oil sketch and bring you through rendering a figure in oils by the end of the day.  A range of traditional techniques will be explored, centered around painting Alla Prima (a style of painting where, instead of building colors up with layers, the painting is done in one session while the paint is still wet. From the Italian word which literally means at once).  Color Mixing, paint application, and basic composition will also be explored in this intensive three day workshop.  Basic paints and brushes will be provided; students will bring their own canvas/paper.

Portrait Painting Techniques: Studies in Concentration
Sarah Brokke
Wednesdays, June 18 – July 16
6-9pm
$130 ($156 non-members) - model fee included in tuition

A technical approach to painting the human face, with half of the class periods focused on one in-depth portrait.  Take the time to really explore and concentrate on the nuances of the human face.  For both oil and acrylic painters, this class will help you flesh out your portraits with strategies for proper color mixing and paint application.  Some experience with portraiture and/or figure drawing is recommended.  Basic paints and brushes will be provided; students will bring their own canvas/paper.

Soul Portraits Revisited
Sarah Brokke
Friday, July 18, 6-9pm
Saturday, July 19, 10am-4pm
$70 ($84 non-members)

Portraiture isn’t always about the perfect replication of a person’s likeness; it’s the insides that count just as much.  Learn how to also capture the interior space of a portrait.  While this class will be oriented towards traditional portraiture, methods of abstraction will also be utilized to create emotional expression and depth within your personal artwork.  Take your work beyond that of academic study, to a new level of expression and voice that extends beyond the physical picture plane.  Some experience with portraiture and/or figure drawing is recommended.  If you took this class already don’t worry – continue to build off what you learned the last time.  Basic paints and brushes will be provided; students will bring their own canvas/paper.

Oil Painting “En Plein Air”
Lee Englund
Saturday & Sunday, September 6 & 7
9am-4pm
$100 ($120 non-members)

Learn how to paint “in the open air” with one of our regional experts, Lee Englund.  Lee has taught painting and drawing in the Duluth Public Schools, and for private lessons, for over 20 years.  Lee's paintings are “an emotional response to what he observes.  His love of nature and art has given him a passion for painting the landscape on location, which offers him a challenge he cannot resist. Lee tries to achieve a creative expression in his landscapes, and at the same time interpret a place and a day for the viewer.”  Learn how to paint the landscape as you see and experience its wonder firsthand.  Embrace the natural elements of your environment, and include that as part of the process of painting.  Weather permitting; this class will meet at one of Duluth’s more picturesque locations (to be determined) for two days of painting from life.  Previous oil painting experience is required.  A supply list will be provided to all who register.

Teen Art Camp Session 2: Photographic Creations
Monday – Friday, June 23-27, 9am – 4pm
$200 ($225 non-members)

It was such a hit last year; we decided to bring it back again.  Ansel Adams once said that “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.”  Get ready for a week of making photographs and memories during our Teen Camp dedicated to traditional and digital photography.  The first two days will be spent at the Depot darkroom discovering the origins of black and white photography – make a pinhole camera, create photogram collages, and paint with the chemicals for different effects.  Take a camera home for the night and learn how to develop the film the next day.  It’s magic to watch art appear right before your eyes!  The rest of the week will be spent at the Lincoln Center taking this traditional knowledge and applying it to the Photoshop program in our Digital Imaging Lab.  Trick out your images and ideas using the latest technology – it’s the best of both worlds.  There might even be time to create a short stop-action film using imovie.  Space is very limited for this camp!  Ages 12-17.

Darcy volunteered during our teen photo camp last year and we’re so happy to have her teaching this special multimedia session for teens.  She is a recently licensed art teacher in the Duluth school district and is currently working at Duluth East High School as the drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, and stained glass teacher.  You name it, she does it!
